Markham was first considered as a place for a township in the late 1790s by William Berzy. The place was first settled in 1794 and after almost two centuries, in 1972, incorporated as a town. It is twinned with the city of Nördlingen in Germany. After the Second World War, the face of the city began changing very fast. It turned from a community where residents only worked within the region to a rapidly-growing suburb, with the main part of its residents commuted into Toronto. This led to a disappearing of rural Markham because of the explosive urban growth. At the late 1960s, Markham already consisted of a few villages, such as Unionville, Markham, and partly Thornhill.

In the early 1970s, the Government of Ontario established the Regional Municipality of York, annexing the northern parts of Markham to the municipalities of Whitchurch-Stouffville and Richmond Hill. At the same time the balance of Markham Township has been incorporated in the Town of Markham with the present town boundaries outlined. Back in 1976, Markham has a population of around 56,000 people. Within the last three decades, it has more than tripled. A jump in the town’s population was mainly caused by tremendous growth in new sub-divisions. The most part of the town’s farm land has moved far north of 16th Avenue. The extensive growth of the northern part of Markham was influenced by environmentalists’ concerns and concerns with the future of the Oak Ridge's Moraine.

Today Markham includes 6 distinct communities: Markham Village, Milliken, Cornell, Wismer Common, Unionville and Thornhill. Within the last three decades, Markham has been recognized as a Toronto’s suburb, but with an independent economy. Lots of high-tech companies came to settle in Markham, attracted by the low tax rates, abundance of land and convenient transportation routes. The town is chosen as a home by Apple Computer Canada, IBM Canada, ATI Technologies, and lots of other international corporations. That’s why the town is now introducing itself as the country’s "High-Tech Capital".

History After the establishment of Upper and Lower Canada in 1790s, the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada was appointed to be Colonel John Graves Simcoe. He named the settlement to north of the former York (now Toronto) after its archbishop, his friend William Markham. Although the township was originally surveyed in the eighteenth century, it wasn’t until 1801 that it was divided into ten concession (now line) road leading south and north, and six sideroads (now avenues), running west and east. At the time, the boundaries of the township occupied the following area: Scarborough Town Line on the south, Whitchurch Town Line on the north, Vaughan Town Line in the west, and Pickering Town Line in the east.
